Although moderately well-known on some other Victorian military sites, I have just joined this forum ......

The above 1936 manual is a very nice reference, which I have saved ..... but for a Zulu War forum this reference is much more applicable ......

I should perhaps add that the bulk of the Treatise deals with all types of "ammunition" topics - i.e. gunpowder, guncotton, fuzes, projectiles and cartridges for the various kinds of ordnance, rockets, and so on ......

The chapter of this particular edition which deals with Small Arms Ammunition (i.e. the cartridges for the Snider-Enfield and Martini-Henry rifles, and the Adams revolver) occupies pages 216-222 inclusive.

Later editions of the Treatise have somewhat more coverage of Small Arms Ammunition. This diagram showing the components and construction of the composite coiled-case Martini-Henry cartridge comes from the 1878 edition -
