| "VETERAN'S FUNERAL. Survivor of Rorke's Drift Engagement. A survivor of Rorke's Drift of the Zulu War was buried at Carlton, Nottingham. in the person of Mr. John Manley,—R.l.P. He was accorded military honours. A native of Barrackton, Cork. Ireland, be saw eighteen years' service with the colours, and left the army with the rank of sergeant. He soldiered with the old 24th and 28th Foot. . _ _ _ It was with the former regiment, now the South Wales Borderers, that be fought at Rorke's Drift. For years he has lived in Nottingham coming there from Leicester. He was a painter and decorator in civil life. Prior to the funeral Requiem Mass was celebrated at the Sacred Heart Church, Carlton. The officiating clergyman at the graveside was Fr. Williamson, St. Edward's of which parish deceased was a member. Draped in the Union Jack the coffin was borne in a gun carriage, the military party being supplied from the Sherwood Foresters, Normanton Barracks."

Cork 16/4/1865. Description: Height 5’1”, aged 15 years. Attested at Cork 17/4/1865. Posted to the 2nd/24th Foot c. December 1866. Appointed Drummer whilst at the Depot, Brecon 1/12/1866. Reduced to Private 14/7/1868. Re-appointed Drummer 1/1/1869. Muster period 1/4/1876 – 30/6/1876 – Dover, Kent. Drummer: Received pay 1/4/1876 – 30/6/1876 – 91 days. Muster period 1/7/1876 – 30/9/1876 – Dover. Drummer: Received pay 1/7/1876 – 30/9/1876 – 92 days. Confined by Civil Power for 4 days. Reduced to Private 7/8/1876. In cells 13-16/8/1876. Confined by Civil Power 12/9/1876. Convicted 13/9/1876 sentenced to 1 month at hard labour. Muster period 1/10/1876 – 31/12/1876 – Dover. Received pay 1/10/1876 – 31/12/1876 – 78 days. Confined by Civil Power 1-12/10/1876. 2 days mulch pay 3-4/11/1876. Muster period 1/1/1877 – 31/3/1877 not found? Served in India no dates. Served in the Kaffir (sic) & Zulu Wars 1878-9. Present during the defence of Rorke’s Drift Mission Station, Natal, South Africa 22-23/1/1879 aged 29 years. Was a patient in the hospital where he assisted in the defence. Battalion Orders Rorke’s Drift 27/2/1879 – A Company to occupy No.1 post inlying picquet. (In hospital excused picquet duty). The following is from 2nd/24th: Natal, South Africa & Gibraltar in the Mediterranean 1879 – 1880. Made pay remittance of £2 to Miss Manley (Sister) 26/5/1879. Sent to Netley Military Hospital Southampton, Hampshire from Casemate Barracks Gibraltar in the Mediterranean c. January 1880. Transferred to the army reserve at Gosport, Hampshire 2/3/1880 under AGL81. Cause of transfer given as Sunstroke. Total service 15 years. Re-called to the Colours and resumed his good conduct pay and was at the Regimental Depot, Brecon 2-13/8/1882. Transferred back to 1st class army reserve no date. Served with the 28th Foot (Gloucestershire Regiment) as a reservist. The following from 1st Gloucestershire Regiment 1882/84. Muster period 1/4/1882 – 30/9/1882 – Birr, Co. Offaly. No.GR/2311 Pte Manley Jno paid 1/4/1882 – 30/9/1882 – 183 days. Muster period 1/10/1882 – 31/3/1883 – Portsmouth, Hampshire. No.GR/2311 Pte Manley J paid 1/10/1882 – 26/1/1883 – 118 days. From Pte 27/1/1883 vice Saunders No.GR/2311 L/Cpl Manley paid 27/1/1883 – 1/3/1883 – 33 days. From L/Cpl 2/3/1883 vice Cooper No.GR/2311 Cpl Manly J paid 2/3/1883 – 31/3/1883 – 29 days. Total 180 days. Muster period 1/4/1883 – 30/6/1883 – Portsmouth. No.GR/2311 Cpl Manley J. Final discharge date unknown. 18 years' service. Honours/awards: South Africa Medal 1877-8-9 with clasp 1877-8-9. Rank on medal Drummer issued 17/6/1881.
