| Whilst carrying out some research on Fort Evelyn I came across a report that there was the grave there of a Drum Major from the 58th Regiment. It was noted by Sir George Douglas after his visit to his sons grave in 1880. Here is part of the article which also mentions his visit to iSandlwana [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Larne Reporter and Northern Counties Advertiser - Saturday 28 August 1880 I am trying to find out who this 58th man was. He either died of disease there (it was garrisoned by two companies of the 58th under Maj Foster) or perhaps was wounded at Ulundi and brought back there and died. Fell like stones only lists a Lance Corporal J.Tomkinson kia at Ulundi. There are two Colour Sergeants J. Piper and T.Wallingford severely wounded and a drummer H. Stewart dangerously wounded at Ulundi Does anyone on here have any ideas who this mysterious 58th Drum Major could be? One to look for next month Gary Thank you Kate Cancel this request. Just found this on the forum [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] |

| On the Melmoth Babanago road just of to the left of the road, beautiful place to be buried. Still dont suppose he has to much interest in the view. |

| Hi Kate I was aware of the Drum Majors Grave , unfortunately I didn't find it when I went there a few years ago , exploring there will probably depend on the height of the Grass as it can be well over 7 ft high ! , which , if that's the case , it'll be pointless stopping . The last few times I've been past this has been the case ! . 90th |

| Solved my own mystery whilst sifting through piles of archives at Killie Campbell earlier this year -
"By six o'clock this day [3rd August 1879] being rather cooler than yesterday the march did not seem so hard as the day before, Drum Major Brown died about a quarter past 12 on the night of the 3rd at Fort Evelyn Augt. 4th ... Drum Major Brown 58th regt. was buried in the afternoon at 4 o'clock some distance from the fort, the funeral party being the same as at home, except that we did not fire over his grave, the doctor found that he had broke a blood vessel which caused him to die instantly."
