Major Wilsone Black

Date of Birth - 10th February 1837 at Glasgow, Lanarkshire, son of James Black of Blythswood Square, Glasgow. Attended Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Ensign, 42nd Foot 11th August 1854; Lieutenant 9th February 1855; Captain 9th January 1857; Half Pay 9th January 1857; Brevet Major 5th July 1872; to 6th Foot 1st April 1873; Major 1st April 1873; to 24th Foot 1st December 1875; Brevet Lieutenant Colonel 31st December 1878; Lieutenant Colonel 4th September 1880; to Staff on Half Pay 25th February 1882; Brevet Colonel 31st December 1891. Retired 2nd February 1899. Died 5th July 1909. Commemorated on a memorial tablet in Brecon Cathedral.
Married 8th June 1869, Florence Maud Ross, at St Pauls, Halifax, Nova Scotia and had issue: Lilian Mabel, born 30th March 1879 at Halifax, Nova Scotia. Passed Staff College 1862. Brigade Major, Nova Scotia 4th February 1867 - 12th February 1872. Mentioned in Despatches 1879. (CB 1879). Commanded 1st Battalion South Wales Borderers, September 1880 - 25th February 1882. Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster General, Nova Scotia 1882 - 87. Assistant Adjutant General, Gibraltar 1887 - 1891. Commanded troops in Jamaica 1891 - 1893; Belfast 1893 - 1895; China and Hong Kong 1895 - 1898. (KCB 1907).
Served in the Crimea from 14th June 1855, present at the siege and fall of Sebastopol. Served in the Kaffir War 1877 - 8, present at the attack on Intaba-ka-N’Doda. Served in the Zulu War 1879.
Thanked in Column Orders dated 4th February 1879 at Rorke’s Drift for recovering the Queen’s Colours 1/24th regiment lost in the Buffalo River after the action at Isandhlwana. Thanked by Lieutenant General Lord Chelmsford in a memorandum dated 4th March 1879 (WO76/23). Deputy Assistant Quartermaster General to Lord Chelmsford in special charge of roads.
