He retired from the Army in 1903 but returned for the first world war, he re-enlisted for duty in the 1st WW as Colonel and adjutant Quarter Master General of the second division of the first Army Corps.
His father was Major Hans Thomas Fell White and was protecting the Gold from Ballarat to Melbourne in 1855 with Irish troops instead of being at Eureka Stockade putting down the miners rebellion.
