Hi all .
I doubt it very much , Ceteswayo died somewhere in Zululand in 1882 - 1883 ?? or thereabouts, It wouldnt be as easy as taking
a photo as Cameras were still quite cumbersome and took a long time to move them from A to B !!!. Also he was buried in the
backblocks of Zululand and it's still well out of the way by even today's standards . I'll go with no . Happy to be corrected .
cheers 90th.

PostSubject: Re: Is this Cetewayo    Prince - Is this Cetewayo EmptyMon Aug 29, 2011 7:59 am

I can only recall a drawing done of his body being prepared for burial. Would need to do some digging to find it.
Burial took place in Feb 1884
Its not without the bounds of possibility that a photo was taken. He spent his final days living near kwa Gqikazi. When he died, 8 Feb 1884, around 2.30 in the afternoon Surgoen Scott was called from Eshowe to examine the body. So its a possibility that a photo could have been taken, I presume that there would have been a photographer in the town.
That said, Ive never seen a photo. My guess would be no it isnt him.

Regards

I very much doubt it is him. His head-ring is missing, which if I recall is basically part of his hair and cannot be removed, as it is waxed or glued into place, not sure though. I did see a drawing of him in death, wrapped tightly in a type of blanket, placed in a sitting position, as I think dead Zulu kings aren't buried lying down.

Good point regarding the head ring, Camera's would not have been an issue with someone as important as Ceteswayo.

Hi Mr.Greaves.
I dont think its a case of '' camera's being an issue with someone as important as Ceteswayo '' , because its a case of
logistics pure and simple , he died a long way from the nearest camera and its not like you could hop on a helicopter
or drive there by car !. And his importance , to whom , his own people poisoned him or so the train of thought is , and the
British , I dont think they thought of him being of any importance either . Nothing was done to preserve the occassion ,
if they went all that way to take 1 photo !!!. I'm positive there would have been many others showing his burial etc etc .
I doubt it's him . As Colin J mentioned all the zulu kings that I've read of have all been buried in blankets and hides ,
and buried in a sitting position .
cheers 90th. Idea

The pic looks very much like that of Prince Dinizulu ka Cetywayo Zulu. He was a very rotund fellow in build with a roundish face and moustache. Pic seems to fit this. If anyone has a copy of R.C. Samuelsons "Long Ago", go to page 213.
Samuelson says that King Cetywayo ka Mpanda Zulu , alive in 1881, but was in captivity at Oude Moulen, Cape Town. He died in 1884, aged 58 years and was buried in the fastness of the Nkandhla forest, Zululand

"For those interested I attach a picture of Prince Dinizulu during his trial in 1907.
Those in the picture are his defence team at the trial.
More interesting however are the two persons on Dinizulu's left, R.C.Samuelson, leader of the Driefontein Scouts and the infamouse Miss H.F.Colenso".
