Enroled at age 14yrs as a 'boy' bandsman.
Served 'in the ranks' of the 17th Lancers for 14yrs 285 days
(during 4yrs and 360 days he was 'under age'.)
Cornet and Adjutant 17th Lancers 23 Mar 1867
Lieutenant 30 Oct 1869
Captain 12 Feb 1879
Appointed Paymaster 17th Lancers 18 Feb 1879
(Hon) Major, Paymaster 79th Cameron Highlanders 18 Feb 1884
Staff Paymaster 27 Mar 1889
Retired (Hon) Lt.-Colonel 28 Mar 1894.

Campaign Medals
Crimea British 3 clasps and Turkish
Indian Mutiny 1858-59
Zulu War 1879
Egypt British 1884-85 'Nile' clasp, and Khedive's star

As Trumpeter in the 17th Lancers, he took part in the 'Charge of The Light Brigade' at Balaclava. (25th October, 1854)
He was severely wounded at Tchernaya and at the siege of Sebastopol buried Mount Jerome Cemetery Dublin Ireland"

"BROWN, John; (1834-1891), military officer.168 Brown was born on the 28th March 1834 in
Meerut, India. He enlisted as a band boy at the age of 14 years in the 17th Lancers. He was
promoted to corporal on the 1st October 1855 and rose to the rank of sergeant on the 16th
November the same year. He was again promoted to the rank of cornet and adjutant by
purchase on the 23rd March 1867.169 Brown secured a promotion to lieutenant on the 23rd
October 1869 and captain on the 12th February 1879. He became an honorary major on the
18th February 1884, and staff pay-Master on the 27th March 1889 stationed at Dublin District
Pay-office.170 Brown served in the Eastern Campaign, of 1854-55, and was present at the
Battle of Alma. He rode in the Charge of Balaclava, as a trumpeter with the Light Brigade and
was seriously wounded and his horse was shot. As a result of his injuries he spent several
months at Scutari hospital172 before returning to his regiment during the siege of Sebastopol,
for which he received, the Crimean Medal with three Clasps and also the 5th Class Turkish
Medal Medjidie.173 He also served in the Indian Mutiny Campaign, during the Action of Barodia,
1858-59 for which he received the campaign Medal. He served as a captain in the South
African war in 1879, in the Zulu Campaign, he was deployed in Natal for which he was
decorated. He then served in Sudan expedition 1884-5, for which he received the Nile Medal
with Clasps and Bronze Star."

LH, wasn't this the chap who made a recording of the bugle call that was sounded during the Charge of the Light Brigade. Recording made early 1900s ???

He is on the Roll , listed as Captain & Paymaster ,  entitled to Medal with No Clasp , Also has British & Turkish Crimea Medals . According to Mack & Shad , he was posted at Pietermaritzburg during the Campaign .
