JAMES McCLOY. Did he serve in the Zulu War 1879,

I am searching for any reference to JAMES McCLOY. born 1840/50 possibly in Carlisle or Bandon in county Cork. Family stories have been banded about to the effect that he enrolled as a drummer boy and at some time ended up in the Zulu wars. He might have desserted or have been imprisoned for bootlegging. Are there any reliable lists of men who fought in the wars?

Welcome to the forum.

I am unable to find him on the Medal roll for the Zulu War, but I will have a better look tomorrow.

Thank you for your prompt response. I can't beleive that he would have been presented with a medal, unless all who took part were given one.
You probably realise that I don't understand too much about the proceedure . Thanks for your time.

Do you have any idea which regiment he was supposed to have served with ? . If you have access to the medal the regt will be on the rim .

Do you happen to know Jame's farthers name or did he have a brother, if so, do you know his name?

Do you also know if James had any tatoos?

The family said that he joined the Queens Own Royal Rifles. I don't recall the mention of a medal. He would have joined from Scotland or Ireland in about 1860. Hope this helps,

Sorry I don't have any info on his father. These are all the things that I am trying to research. If I could find any war records it might say birth place or next of kin.

The reason I asked the questions is because of what I have found today.

I still have not been able to locate James on the Medal Roll but I have found a James McCloy but not Zulu War.

This James was in the 6th Regiment of foot (Royal 1st Warwickshire) - 28th Brigade.

His service record makes for interesting reading and this could fit alongside with your Family stories.

This is very interesting and I would have loved this to have 'our' James.

Unfortunately the dates don't tally. He certainly fits the bill for being 'a bit of a boy' but he was born sometime between 1840-50 according to the cencus. Thanks anyway. Sandra

Hi Sandra,

The queen's own rifles was a canadian regiment formed in 1860 and as far as I know only saw service in south africa during the second boer war.

I have found a James william ferguson Milton who on a certificate is named as james william ferguson milton McCloy.

He was born in 1848 and died in 1915, birthdate tallies, not sure if it helps any but who knows?, here's a link
