Hi 😕

Col. Durnfords horse was called Chieftain.

After Durnford decided to stay the horse was probebly killed or taken by a Fugitive.

Dave is correct on the Prince Imperial’s horse being named “Percy”. It is one of two horses he purchased to replace the ones he brought from England, both of which died at Durban. The second horse was named “Fate.” (Source: Military History Journal, Vol. 3, No. 2 – December, 1974 “The Prince” by Alf Wade)

Captain William C. F. Molyneux, A.D.C. to Lord Chelmsford at Gingindlovu , had one horse named “Lampas” mortally wounded. He them removed the saddle and put it on his second horse “Poll Evil”. According to Captain Molyneux, he had to purchase two new horses since “Poll Evil had gone the way of poor Lampas.” (Source: “Campaigning in South Africa and Egypt,” by William Charles Francis Molyneux)

PostSubject: Re: The horse's   horse - The horse's EmptyMon Dec 26, 2011 6:12 am

Many years ago I was a visitor to the Durban Club, which was housed in a grand building on Durban's Esplanade. Amongst the memorabilia on display was one of Percy's hooves. If I remember correctly, it had been converted into an inkwell and was adorned with a silver plaque with an inscription describing its origins.

The Durban Club was later confined to a small part of the building and by now may even be defunct. The memorabilia, including Percy's hoof, may be scattered or may even be no more, given the price of silver and the local indifference to Colonial history.

Tpr Clarke's horse was an English charger and was called 'Warrior".
He bought it for 20 pounds from another English Officer who found the horse totally unmanageable. He had a "propensity" for bucking and kicking. No one dared walk around the back of the animal because of this. Thus, to groom, the horse had to be thrown.
This horse was also used to train and punish police recruits who did not do well at riding school and was referred to as 'the beast" or "monster", by those having to take their punishment on it.
Tpr Clarke had no problem with Warrior at all and the horse served him well.

Did Durnford have two horses named "'Chieftain" because his horse at Bushmans Pass was named "Chieftain" and that was in 1873 Six year prior to the Zulu War. I don't know what the life expectancy was for horses considering the various diseases that effected them. Was the horse not injured in the fall at Bushmans pass.

Hi All,
Sorry for chipping in late, whilst reading I came across these, if I find anymore I will post them later.

As 90th stated Mossop's horse was a basuto pony called "Warrior", the day after he carried Mossop to the safety of Kambula the horse succumed to it's wounds. Trp. Mossop was then issued with another called "Old Bones".

Buller had a horse called "Punch" which was a brindle colour.

Larsen's horse by the drawing had a white horse - sorry no name.

In a photograph an unnamed Officer/N.C.O. of the Frontier Light Horse he had a horse called "Lady" and looked to be bay/brindle in colour.

Heinrich an interpreter of the 4th Kings Own had a horse called "Garibaldi"
cheers
