What a resume: Fought alongside Garibaldi; Union Army in American Civil War; jailed for Fenianism; leading figure in Black Flag Rebellion challenging British authority in Kimberley; fought against the BaPedi led by Sekukuni-- on behalf of President Thomas Francois Burgers of the South African Republic; editor of the Natal Witness; advisor to Boer Commander Piet Joubert in the First Anglo-Boer War. This all before he went on the American lecture tour and was the subject of this New York Times article of December 25, 1887:

He apparently fought for the Metis in the Uprising of 1885 in Canada, alongside Louis Riel.
