SAGS to Sissison's Horse

Not strictly (or even remotely) Zulu War but I have a SAGS 1877-78 clasp medal to a Tpr. J.J. Waldeck of Sissison's Horse - any info on him or the unit would be highly appreciated as there doesn't appear to be much on the net or books I have access to.

The medal is correctly named in Cape naming style circa 1906.

Sorry Rory , I haven't heard of them , not sure why it would have Cape Naming Style 1906 when it's from 77-78 ? , those Medals were issued in 1881 if I'm not mistaken ? .

No trace in my research files, there was a Trooper J. Waldeck who served in the Diamond Fields Horse, who was entitled to the bar 1877-8-9.

In addition there was Trooper H. D. Waldeck who served in the 3rd Cape Mounted Yeomanry, who was entitled to the bar 1879.

I would suggest a search of the National Archives of South Africa on your man’s details and see what that reveals.

Sissison’s Horse appears to have been linked with Murraysburg Volunteer Cavalry, so some research in that area might prove fruitful.

The Cape naming style of medals applied to a number of Cape of Good Hope GSM's as well as several Frontier War (1877-79) medals. Two Cape Town jewelers, Seale and Armstrong, were commissioned to engrave blanks sent out from England for the purpose to those who had applied late or who had been late awards.

Waldeck was one such man - a list exists which I attach hereto

Will do John - I wanted to post the Seal and Armstrong list but my inability to tinkle the keyboard correctly has proved to be my downfall.
