| Hi Pleased to announce that Studies in the Zulu War Volume VI is now available direct from me in the first instance. This volume is a tad more expensive than the others due to the number of photos it contains. Seven essays are included as below. Price is £17.50 plus P&P payable by BACs, or cheque in the post. Either e-mail or pm me with your address and e-mail. Regards Julian Whybra
Commissary-General Edward Strickland by Julian Whybra
The biography of Commissary-General Strickland reveals his rôle in the Zulu War, his connexions to the Anstey family, and his promotion of the Imperial Idea in New South Wales.
Robert Hall at Isandhlwana and Rorke’s Drift by Julian Whybra
The various accounts of that controversial figure Robert Hall, including some newly- discovered letters not previously published, are brought together in one essay. Comparison, cross-referencing and examination of thirteen different primary sources enables authorship of anonymous accounts to be proven and Hall’s actions and movements on the day of Isandhlwana and Rorke’s Drift and afterwards to be traced, the whole forming a comprehensive analysis.
A Tortuous Affair & A Grave Mistake by John Young
Tales of mutilation and disfigurement abound in the Zulu War, practised after an enemy had been slain by a victorious Zulu, but were there instances of torture? It is John Young’s belief that there were, but they were neither commonplace nor common practice.
The Lost Cairns of Isandhlwana by Frank Allewell
An old photograph of Isandhlwana shows some burial cairns which are no longer visible. Frank Allewell’s investigation led to their re-discovery and to an intriguing theory.
The Diary of Captain Acting Surgeon Francis Buée by Julian Whybra
The family of Acting Surgeon Frank Buée made his diary, found on the battlefield, available for the first time this year. This essay deals with how it arrived back in England and reached his family. The transcription describes the series of events, sometimes exasperating sometimes humorous, always at a human level but never mundane, which resulted in Column No. 3’s advance to, and establishment of a camp at, Isandhlwana.
Mvovana Ngcobe: Recollections of Isandhlwana by Frank Allewell and Julian Whybra
The purchase of a book from the library of S. B. Bourquin led to the discovery inside of a newspaper clipping from the 1960s. This proved to be the recollections of the battle of Isandhlwana by the then oldest living survivor – a centenarian Zulu.
Despise not thy Enemy by Julian Whybra
The last essay provides the background to the Zulu War’s most iconic cartoon – Tenniel’s ‘A Lesson’. |
