PostSubject: William Shutt (reg no. 469)   William Shutt (reg no. 469) EmptyWed Nov 10, 2021 7:24 pm

Hi I was wondering if William Shutt part of the RMLI took part. I have his service record from the National Archives (ref no. 469) and he seems to have been on HMS Tamar on and off from Jan 1877-Sept 1880 as part of the Plymouth Division. His record says he was awarded the South Africa medal in 1881 when aboard HMS Impregnable.

As I don’t know the years when Tamar was in South Africa, I’m not sure how involved he would have been.

If anyone can shed light on this, I would be truly grateful.

Hi Mark25

The following information comes from one of the forum's member (Petty Officer Tom).

The Department of the Accountant General of the Navy and Comptroller of Navy Pay Admiralty, Spring Gardens, SW issued the following:
“Notice is hereby given, that the Medals for the South African Expeditions, awarded to the Officers and Crews of the undermentioned ships, for service during the periods stated herein, are now in course of distribution, viz.:—
H.M.S. “Active,” 3rd and 4th October, 1877.
H.M.S. “Active,” 13th December, 1877, to 11th January, 1878.
H.M.S. “Active,” 24th February to 7th March, 1878.
H.M.S. “Active,” 7th August, 1878, to 18th March, 1879.
H.M.S. “Boadicea,” 15th March to 12th June, 1879.
H.M.S. “Euphrates,” 2nd July to 16th August, 1879.
H.M.S. “Forester,” 8th April to 4th September, 1879.
H.M.S. “Himalaya,” 9th to 15th March, 1878.
H.M.S. “Orontes,” 3rd to 6th June, 1879.
H.M.S. “Shah,” 6th March to 24th July, 1879.
H.M.S. “Tamar,” 10th March to 11th April, 1879.
H.M.S. “Tenedos,” 20th December, 1878, to 9th February, 1879.”

The South Africa Medal was awarded to HMS Tamar for the period 10 March 1879 to 11 April 1879 for all members of her crew.

William Shutt was awarded this medal without a Clasp.

Hope this helps

Andy

Thank you so much for this. Is there anyway I can find out what the RMLI did during this war? I’m just keen to know of any involvement they had in this war.

Hi Mark25

When Petty Officer Tom sees your post, he will explain HMS Tamar role in the Zulu War better than I can.
