| I'm actually doing my dissertation on the attitudes of the Victorian soldiery towards the Anglo-Zulu war, and was just wondering what the reality of the lives of the soldiers was after the conflict. Although the perceptions of the contemporary populus may have changed, didn't a large number of soldiers later find themselves in prison/the workhouse/discharged with ignonimy? Hook got a job at the British museum I believe, but he's the only person i can find who elevated himself as a result of the conflict - in fact, didn't his wife 'believe' he was dead??!! |

| I would recommend you look at the: LEGACY: Heroes of Rorkes Drift' by Kris Wheatley. You will get an in-dept understanding off what happen to some of the soldiers that took part in the Zulu War of 879.
You mentioned Hook, Read about what happen to those who fought along side him at Rorkes Drift when they returned home. There is one defender who won a substantial about of money in a lottery. These are the only books I have read that will give you the answers to what you’re looking for. They are also the not so well known soldiers.

| I have heard about the LEGACY: Heroes of Rorkes Drift. And have been tempted to buy one. But are they has good as members say they are on this forum. I don’t want to buy a book with information I have read in other Zulu war history books. Mainly because I’m unemployed at the moment. So any reassuring comments would be welcome. |

| hi Dave. The LEGACY series is a 7 volume set dealing with N.C.O"S and other ranks which fought at RORKE"S DRIFT, it tells you when and where they enlisted , where they were shipped , but mainly it gives details of their family life , back in England after their enlistments, ie, where they were married , and to whom , childrens names , their employment . Extremely well researched by author Kris Wheatley, through census records , death certificates , marriage records and other records that had been hidden away for years . I purchased the first 6 volumes on our admin"s recomendation and thought them to be a MUST READ !. Being unemployed you wont have cash to splash !, i suggest you buy one or borrow one , read it and then you can make up your own mind . I for one think you wont be disappointed. cheers 90th.
ps. number 7 is due for release any day . |

Dave, The LEGACY series is not like other History books. The information in these books is based on Genealogy research. Which is involves a lot more work than what goes in to some of the Zulu War History books. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] |
