Isandhlwana unaccounted for casualties Empty
PostSubject: Isandhlwana unaccounted for casualties   Isandhlwana unaccounted for casualties EmptyTue Oct 22, 2024 8:40 pm

Good afternoon. Are there any individuals that were considered "missing, presumed dead" after Isandhlwana?

I have numerous accountings of bodies accounted for, but there is still a small delta between presumed dead and accounted for dead.

I thought one of the Natal Carbineers was unaccounted for, though presumed dead. Any idea who that was?

Were any others identified as missing, presumed dead?

Greatly appreciate any assistance!

Mendenhall and Whitelaw: one unidentifiable Carbineer body was found and buried and one man was never found. See the Granger essay in vol. V of Studies in the Zulu War fn. 163.

For example, Conductor P.(?) ‘McCarthy’, attached to the A.C.T.D. of No. 2 Column, is known to have been in camp. It is not known whether he was killed or survived. However two genealogical websites refer to a William McAthie (alias McCathie/Macathie), born 1835 Scotland, who married Helen Dorothy Foord 1866 York, Natal, had seven children 1867-1877 and, according to a descendant, was killed at Isandhlwana.
Alternatively these websites might be referring to Sergt. W. McCarthy 1/3rd N.N.C. who was kia at Isandhlwana.
The mystery is there to be solved for any would-be Indiana Jones to discover!

Hey presto! The mystery has been solved by Stefaan of this forum. He notified me yesterday of an update for the latest edition of England's Sons as follows:
William McCathie is recorded under a variety of names, most often as Conductor McCarthy in Durnford’s Column No. 2. Stefaan found Probate Records, Natal Deceased Estates 1878-1881 (including a Death Notice) pertaining to William Macathie (corrected to McCathie) of Karkloof (wife Helen), killed at Isandhlwana. This man was the waggon conductor. He is not to be confused with Sergt. William S. McCarthy 1/3rd N.N.C., also from the Karkloof. kia Isandhlwana, for whom Calus also found two Probate records identifying him as such.
Well done Stefaan!
