Hello My name is Stephen James. I have just begun my family tree research. My second great grandfather was Samuel Popple. He was married to Mary Ann Avery. I believe he died at Isandlwana on 22 Jan 1879. Was just wondering if anyone knows how I can trace his military records.

Hello Stephen,

This is what's in 'The Noble 24th' by Norman Holme:

POPPLE Samuel – Private – 2-24/1709 – 2nd/24th G Company
Married: Mary who died at Dover 12/1/1935 aged 91.
Children: William James baptised 22/4/1873 Dover.
Death: K-in-A Isandlwana Mountain, Zululand 22/1/1879 aged 36. Buried Isandlwana. Effects claimed by his wife under AGL84 – E/76503/-. Effects roll gives his number incorrectly as 1079.
Service details: Enlisted at Southwick, Sussex 20/2/1865 aged 23. Attested at Southwick 21/2/1865.
Honours/awards: South Africa Medal 1877-8-9 with clasp 1877-8-9 Issued 7/4/1881.

Samuel is commemorated on Mary's gravestone in Dover - if you just enter 'Popple' into this site's search function it will take you to a photograph.

Regards,

Tim
