Cardiff Times And South Wales Weekly News July 5th 1902.

Death of surviver at Bargoed

One of the few surviving hero's of Rorke's Drift disaster in 1879 has passed away in the person of Thomas James, High Street, Bargoed. Thomas fought throughout the Zulu war as a private in the 24th. He was in receipt of a army pension for about twelve years and died at the early age of 47. He was lately employed at one of the neighbouring collieries, was of a retiring disposition, and only on rare occasions could he be got to relate any of his experiences of hand to hands fights with the Zulus. The funeral will take place on Tuesday at the Gelligaer Parish churchyard.
