| Hi Kate To answer yours and mine own question. https://www.1879zuluwar.com/t9409-lieutenant-albert-dennis-royal-engineers?highlight=dennisYes he did take part in the Anglo-Zulu war of 1879. "In August 1877 Alfred and another lad, named Palmer, went by train to Chatham to join the Royal Engineers, using all their money on the fare. Palmer failed his medical so could not join up, so got a building job, but eventually sought an uncle in London who took him home to Bedford where he was then up in Court for leaving the B.V.R. and his apprenticeship without permission. This is when the Dennis family found out that Alfred had joined the R.E's under the false name of George Dennis." [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Andy |

| Alfred Dennis was my paternal Great Grandfather. He joined up under the name of George Dennis. I attach two images from a local newspaper after his involvement at Rorke's Drift was questioned many years ago. I'll post some more photos and information on different threads including his first hand account of the Battle of Ulundi [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] |
