PostSubject: Sir Evelyn Wood his shooting at Kambula and his deafness. Lieutenant Francis Smith   smith - Sir Evelyn Wood his shooting at Kambula and his deafness. Lieutenant Francis Smith EmptyMon Sep 19, 2022 5:36 pm

Althought the first part of this story has been seen before I can't remember reading the last little anecdote before by Lieutenant Francis Smith.
Lieutenant Francis Smith 90th Regiment (not 1/13th as mentioned elsewhere) was severely wounded in the arm when trying to save a man who had fallen when escaping from the cattle laager at Kambula (mentioned  in despatches 1877-78-79 clasp)

West Sussex Gazette - Thursday 08 February 1912

The London Gazette Publication date: 7 May 1879 Issue: 24719 Page: 3245
"Lieutenants Smith and Lysons, Orderly Officers, who with Captain Woodgate carried in a wounded soldier of the 13th who was lying under fire, in doing which Lieutenant Smith was
himself wounded. The wounded were cared for most promptly by Surgeons O'Reilly, Brown, and, Staff generally under fire.
I have. &c.,
EVELYN WOOD, Colonel,
Commanding No. 4 Column."
