Natal Witness 23rd July 1881
"The mother of this gentleman writes to us, enquiring for information regarding his whereabouts. Mr McGowan left the army, in which he held the rank of Captain, in South Africa; he then visited the Diamond Fields, and after moving about came to Natal about the time of the Zulu war, and was engaged in one of the native levies or volunteer corps. We shall be glad to recieve any information concerning his wherebaouts, if alive."
