| I'm sure most on here are aware but 'Rorke's Drift by Those Who Were There' by Lee Stevenson, Ian Knight and Alan Baynham Jones is now available. Available on Amazon £15.39 or possibly cheaper else where. My copy was delivered today. Packed with accounts, it and the yet unreleased second volume should be the go to books for anyone researching Rorke's Drift. Well done Lee, Ian and Alan. Kate |

| I received my copy of Rorke’s Drift By Those Who Were There on Saturday. I particularly like the dust jacket cover a coloured plate from The Penny Illustrated. The alphabetical list of descriptions is so easily to follow, Volume 1 covers from Adendorff to Jobbins, so it is easy to realise what at least some of Volume 2 will have in store. Nice to see some ‘new’ photographs that I had not seen before, but there was one photograph that I had seen before, which in my opinion is incorrectly identified. That is the photograph identified as Prince Dabulamanzi kaMpande listed as No. 34. The photograph has previously appeared in Ian Knight’s Nothing Remains But to Fight. As some of the forum might be aware I have something of a close affinity with the descendant family of Prince Dabulamanzi. I vividly recall showing my late, great friend Prince V. A. Shange the photograph in Nothing Remains But to Fight, and his response he refuted it then with the words “That is not my grandfather! That is my Great Uncle his half-brother, Prince Ndabuko.” Since I lost Prince Shange a couple of years back, I sought clarification from two senior members of the Dabulamanzi descendants. Both of whom agree that above photograph is of Prince Ndabuko. One of them included this cutting from The Graphic to disprove it. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]A detail of page from The Graphic. 20th January 1883. Prince Ndabuko is frequently misidentified as older, full-blood, brother King Cetshwayo kaMpande in some publications and frequently on the internet. I have even seen an example where the well-known image of Prince Ndabuko taken with a sailcloth background was incredibly identified as an Indian warrior from 1818, predating the advent of photography! Apart from this faux pas, I recommend the book. JY

| Agreed John, I too recommend it. A must for any AZW bookshelf. For those who are interested Captain Alan Gardner's actions, in connection with the defence, will be examined in greater depth in the second volume. After all, there may not have been any survivors accounts to publish if it hadn't been for his fortheought. Well done all.

| I have a copy of the original. There is a wrong reference in the index of names at the back (I don't know if it is repeated or has been corrected in the new edition). Three of the page number refs. appearing under Jenkins, Private James actually refer to Jenkins, Private D(avid). They are pages 26, 29, and 275. Similarly, on page 119 the letter attributed to 25B/970 Pte. John Jones B coy of Rorke's Drift is actually by 2-24/970 Pte. John Jones who was out with Chelmsford's Reconnaissance-in-Force. |

| Julian,
The pagination in this revised publication has obviously altered.
David Jenkins now appears as the author of the correspondence in the Brecon County Times 29th March 1879 & 26th April 1879. His obituary from the same newspaper also appears dated 22nd August 1912.
As to anything from anyone named Jones, I assume it would appear in Volume 2.
Does that help?

| [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.](John Young Collection) Prince Dabulamanzi kaMpande unleashes an attack for getting his photograph wrong. Whilst Rev. Witt does his best Guy Fawkes impersonation. JY |

| What with all the smoke in the picture it looks as though the gunpowder worked this time round. |
