Hello Everyone,

New Member. Did a search and no luck. Opinion of this book? 1992 published. Same material and more in newer editions under different title or good standalone.
Interested in oral accounts.

Have read some older titles. Emery-Red Soldier, Edgerton-Lions, Curling letters etc.
Is there a recommended account for Hlobane? Dennsion's memoir is confusing to me. Blood on the Painted Mountain or other?

Edit: Did a few more searches and see Blood on Painted Mountain is a good buy.

It is an edited revamping of previously published accounts, some of which are dated. It was reissued as Voices from the Zulu War.

In my honest opinion Blood on the Painted Mountain goes off at a tangent and fails to concentrate on the subject matter of the events of Hlobane & Khambula.

For a better synopsis of the events in northern KwaZulu I would recommend A Boiling Cauldron.

Just my thoughts and far away from my library, but surrounded by Zulu!

I echo John's comment though the description of the Hlobane battle itself is covered by just a few chapters.
If you like oral accounts then look at George Mossop's Running the Gauntlet (1937). Mossop aged 16 at the time survived Hlobane.
