| Thanks many entries in newspaper archives, for a James Hamer, not good ones, and no mention when he died in 1928,I presume that was he, that he was in the Zulu War
Rowland Miller, again no mention that he had been in the Zulu War, often remaining family inserted a post on that person's death. I am sure there are more, who just changed their names. |

| Krish I was for a long time in touch with Hamer's great-granddaughter. I did have a letter from her giving details of where and when Hamer lived while alive. I'll try to find it and get some dates of when he was living in NZ. Julian |

| Mr Mabin was reported in the NZ Press on two occasions, he lived in Woodstock in South Africa, and was still alive in 1935. The first occasion he related the story of his involvement at Rorke's Drift which was reported in various overseas press. |

| Several of the members of the New South Wales Contingent who went to Suakin in 1885 (Mahdist War) have been identified as AZW veterans. I can have a look later.

| Brigadier General John Robinson ROYSTON (Galloping Jack)
While Galloping Jack did VISIT Australia arriving on 3 October 1934 (see The Argus (Melbourne) 4 October 1834) to attend the Centenary celebrations he did not emigrated to Australia. He had been invited by the 8th Light Horse A.I.F. Association. After the celebrations and tours he returned to South Africa. It was in South Africa that he married in 1937 and died in 1942.

| Thanks for the update. I was surprised at the number associated with Sudan in 1885. I was also surprised at those who stated they had a VC. I still believe there are more, who simply changed their names. I uncovered only one. My research was based on "Zulu" /"Veterans" there were about another 10 or so who claimed to have served, but the use of "Zulu" referred sometimes to Boer War. |

| South Africa Medal (Zulu) clasp 1879
N Gannaway AB HMS Boadicea
Born Nathaniel Edward Gannaway in Southampton 21st August 1859, he entered the Royal Navy at St Vincent as Boy 2nd Class 10th September 1874. He subsequently joined Excellent 29th October 1875, Boscawen 26th January 1876, Duke of Wellington 23rd May 1876, HMS Raleigh 14th June 1876 where he was rated Ordinary Seaman 21st August 1877, Duke of Wellington 1st January 1878 where he was rated Able Seaman 8th November 1878, HMS Boadicea 24th November 1878. Whilst in South Africa he was sentenced to 6 weeks in prison by the civil powers at Simonstown (offence not recorded). Joining HMS Thalia11th April 1882, Excellent 3rd June 1882, he was discharged invalided from the Royal Naval Hospital, Haslar 23rd August 1883. Nathaniel died in Wentworth, New South Wales, Australia 19th November 1889.
Whilst looking through the local newspapers of the period I came across the following article which describes a murder taking place on the steam boat “Nellie” where it was reported that Nathaniel had been harassing the chef a “Charlie Chong” a China man who had been the victim of ridicule from Nathaniel over many months, which resulted in the chef stabbing Nathaniel in the abdomen and killing him. It looks as though Charlie Chong’s sentenced was reduced to manslaughter.
Please see the following photos of the medal and news reports.
