| Hello all, I'm looking for some advice on how and where to sell my late father's militaria collection. I am now based in Surrey in the UK. My father acquired most of the colection in the 70's and 80's in Natal South Africa, he advertised weekly in the local Sun newspaper classifieds and bought up family-held heirlooms along the Natal south coast. A significant part of the collection includes Zulu war medals. There are 47 QSA medals, only five of which don't have a bar(s) and 23 of them are part of groups that include medals such as KSA, BSA Company, South Africa Medal, Aux Forces Long Service and Meritorious Service, Natal Native Rebellion, Kimberley Star, and great war medals. There are also three Anglo-Boer Oorlog Medals and many other medals that are not part of the QSA groups, similar to those listed in the groups above.
Also, possibly less relevant to this group, there are many other campaign medals and extensive WW1 and WW2 campaign/service medals (yet to be fully catalogued). I also have crates of books, crates of bayonets and swords, and boxes of badges/insignia/buttons, and boxes of SADF commando shoulder flashes.
I would appreciate some advice and guidance from the group. Many thanks in advance.

| Allan,
Welcome to the forum. That appears to be quite a collection you have. I would recommend that you look for a reputable auction house that deals with medals and memorabilia. There are several in England. One of our members is Justin Young of Jager Medals. He is Jager1 on the forum.

| Do any of your Zulu War medals relate to men who fought at Isandhlwana? |

| Allan, You may find it useful to get an additional assesment from Christopher Mellor-Hill of Noonans - you will find him very helpful and sound - [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] |

| Many thanks all for your comments, I appreciate it. I am in contact with Justin and will reach out to Chris.
@Julian, I don't think so. I only have one SAM which sadly is presented as a medallion. The suspension, ribbon and bar have been removed. It was awarded to TR. LYLE, STANGER MD. RIFLES. I do also have five British South Africa Company medals, yet not sure if these were awarded for the Zulu wars? |

| @Julian, Actually I do have another two in groups with my QSA's:
SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL, CONDUCTOR R.W. MANLEY, A.S.C., QSA MEDAL (CC, TVL, WPNR, WIT), SERJT. R. W. MANLEY, DRISCOLL'S SCOUTS, 416
THE SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL, 1879 CLASP, LUIT. SHUTER, STANGER MD. RIFLES, QSA MEDAL (OFS, LN, BELF), S.S. W. SHUTER, S.A. LI HORSE, 1675 I have not researched any of these |

| Just found an interesting (10 year old) conversation in this forum regarding the Stanger Mtd Rifles [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]Seems that Luit. Shuter was one of the 36 members of the Stanger Mtd Rifles when the corp was mobilized in 1878. Tr. Lyle isn't named on that list, yet it states that other men joined taking the number to 43 so its possible he may have been one of them. I've also read that this number increased to 250. "Anglo-Zulu War 1879: The Stanger Mounted Rifles marched to Thring's Post where they were met by the Victoria Mounted Rifles and the Buffs; they proceeded to the Lower Drift and were joined by the Alexandra Mounted Rifles, Durban Mounted Rifles and the Natal Hussars, collectively named the Natal Volunteer Force. They formed the southern flank under Captain P H S Barrow, 19th Hussars, of Colonel Pearson's 3rd Buffs (3rd Regiment of Foot). The battle of Inyezane and the relief of Eshowe followed." MANLEY was a transport conductor with the Army Service Corps, so it would take some research to figure out what he was supporting |

| Thanks for the posts. Sadly, none of these relate to Isandhlwana. |
