Served with the 17th Lancers during the whole of the advance of that regiment in Zululand with the 2nd Division. He was present at the cavalry affair at Erzungayann and at the Battle of Ulundi. He was slightly wounded in the latter engagement, in the pursuit, with an assegai, and his horse was also wounded with a bullet. He returned with the regiment to Pinetown, and embarked on the 27th August.
