| Hi everyone. I just finished watching Zulu Dawn. (Again) Some of the film is based on facts. (Doe’s anyone know from where Cy. Enfield obtained his source and refrences to enable him to make this film)
VEREKER was show in the film to be assisting Melvill and Coghill. Of course this was not the case. So why would he be shown doing so in the film. Was Vereker’s body actually found on the Battlefield at Isandlwana?

| Two different statements that refer to Verekers body:
The following extract of a letter from Rorke's Drift gives an account of the mournful excursion (to Isandlwana on 21 May):
"The body of Captain Shepstone was discovered and buried. Colonel Durnford's body with those of Lord, Downe and Vereker, all of the Artillery, were also buried."
This would suggest that Vereker died along side Durnford.
Mackinnon and Shadbolt, writing in 1880, and reproduced by Greaves and Knight in A Review of the South African Campaign of 1879:
"Four months afterwards Vereker's body was found on the field of battle by Viscount Downe, still unstripped and was easily identified."
Speaking to your initial question of what sources were used for the movie - I have always thought that it must have been Donald Morris as the blue-print for the 'facts' in the film.
Every century old myth related to the battle was played out in the movie. Most of which have been proven wrong by historians over the years.
Still my favorite movie though.

| hi Mons14 . It seems to me those two statements are one and the same The R.D Letter is dated 21st May. Mckinnon and Shadbolt states 4 months after the battle which is indeed May !. The battle was 22nd Jan :) Hope that makes sense . cheers 90th. |

| One of the most poetic pieces of licence is on the DVD cover rear. " General Lord Chelmsford is the man responsible for the fatal decision that leads to the massacre. Colonel Dunford is the military hero who courageously faces the Zulu army, outnumbered 16 to 1 he leads his men into battle and certain death." Sentiments Im sure CTSG would agree whole hearted with ! |
