Is this book different from Harford by David Payne? The dust cover certainly is.

Yes - different - this is a 1978 (South African) publication - Harford's own journal but edited by Daphne Child.

hi umbiki .
Well done , I very nearly didnt list it , only decided to because of David Payne joining the forum and Harford
has become popular or I should say more popular since David joined our forum . It also seemed a reasonable
price I got mine cheaper but it was a couple of years ago  .
cheers 90th.

Hi 90th

Yes - I thought it worth a 'punt' for a tenner - and sole bidder - so well pleased. All I've got to do now is find time to read it - and with a 600 page "Zulu Rising" imminent, that might be tricky!

Thanks again.

hi umbiki.
Glad you are happy , the book is certainly worth a tenner at least and to be the sole bidder you indeed did well.
One thing in your favour the book only has 88 pages ! . Unlike Zulu Rising which will run into 600 approx !!!. I had
two books arrive yesterday and one last week and then also Snook's book will arrive in a couple of weeks , and then
I will purchase Zulu Rising , at the moment I'm halfway through Laband and Thompson's book ' Kingdom And Colony
At War ' I wont catch up till the new year Suspect
cheers 90th.

90th

My problem is I'm presently bogged down with a book I was given last Xmas about a French mission in the old Soudan in the 1890's. I'm still only half way through it as unfortunately it is proving rather academic (i.e. above my level of intellect!) and is, quite frankly, a bit dull; which is a pity because essentially it is a story about colonial forces sweeping across Africa at the expense of the native population (sound familiar?). I think it might well have to go back on the shelf when "Rising" arrives! Rolling Eyes

But anyway, here's to "happy reading" ...................

Book Description: PIETERMARITZBURG, 1978, SHUTER & SHOOTER,FIRST SOUTH AFRICAN EDITION, HARD BOUND ( lacks dj ), 6x9, Fine condition, iii, 88 pages, illus, maps, index/ Colonel Henry Charles Harford C.B. served as a young man in the Zulu War of 1879, and was Staff Officer to Commandant Lonsdale of the 3rd Regiment, Natal Native Contingent. He kept a journal in which he recorded his experiences and original observations, and this MS, now published for the first time, represents a valuable contribution to the historiography of the campaign.Harford held a British Army commission with the rank of Lieutenant, but was given the honorary rank of Captain when appointed to the N.N.C. Having spent his youth in Natal, he had a thorough knowledge of the country and the Zulu language, a fact which made him very useful to the Contingent and adds weight to his account of events. In his journal Harford, who was with Lord Chelmsford's Column, tells of the initial skirmishes of the war and of the disaster at Isandhlwana and the defence of Rorke's Drift. He describes the recovery at Fugitives' Drift of the Queen's Colour of the 1st Battalion, 24th Regiment, claiming that he was personally responsible for finding the standard. Later, on resuming the Adjutancy of his own regiment, the 99th, he took part in the hunt for the Zulu king, Cetshwayo, after the battle of Ulundi. He writes of Cetshwayo's capture and detention, and tells how he came to know the exile well when he was stationed at Cape Town in 1881.Harford's journal will be a prized possession of those interested in Africana. It is enhanced by the author's unique sketches of scenes connected with the war, which have never been reproduced before.

Well - I can try - but two things;

i) How do we stand on Copyright and,

ii) perhaps more fundamentally, how? Shocked

hi umbiki.
Glad you are enjoying it , I'm glad I'm not alone as I have no idea with any of that , and secondly some of the illustrations in
my copy are very faded so not sure how they would come out posted on the forum .

Hi 90th

Yes, some images are of a faded quality in my copy too - I suspect because of the nature of the originals - pencil/charcoal sketches - rather than being a fault of the publishing process. But a charming little book all the same. I'm going to need a bigger bookshelf soon but it's a matter of persuading "her indoors" - which is easier said than done!.
