| "Zulu Rising - The Epic Story of Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift ". 604 pages plus pages 605 - 697 that include a Glossary, Notes and Index - 12 pages (24 sides) of b/w photographs and some maps. Looks to be a towering piece of work - the first sentence of which is, "This book has been over thirty years in the making ......." . Wow!

| Good point 24th. A question that I often ask myself. Considering the length of the war around Six Months there already seems to be a lot on the Zulu War. However I would like to believe that authors are continually researching for new material. Or come across something that up-dates or precedes something that they have all ready written. I won’t be buying the book until I find out if there is anything new inside.

| I have to report the outcome of a disastrous engagement which took place in the early hours of Saturday last, 21 August 2010, between my lower back and a heavy wooden chest which has seen me "laid up" for a couple of days. Thankfully, my copy of "Zulu Rising" was to hand so I have had the time to make good inroads (every cloud ....... eh?) and much more than I normally would because I am a slow reader. I'm currently just over half way through. I do take the point that a lot has already been written about the AZW - particularly the events of 22 January 1879 - but I sort of take the alternative view that the best way to properly find out if there is anything new is to buy the book and judge for oneself. Certainly I will reserve my judgement until I have finished but it is fair to say that I, personally, have not been disappointed thus far. Anyway, time for another cup of tea and a lie down with my book ....... NUUUUURSE!!! U |

| Hi 90th
:lol!:
Don't want to hi-jack the thread but got another tale to tell. I managed to twist around a bit last night to catch a glimpse of my (now bruised) back and just happened to comment, "it's turning blue" to which came the reply from the Great White Queen, " not Zulu again!". :lol!:
But back to the thread ..................

| Zulu Rising, a major new study by Ian Knight of the battles of iSandlwana and Rorke’s Drift in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, tells the story of how a part-time army of African herdsmen brought to a halt – temporarily at least – more than half a century of British Imperial progress across southern Africa. The battle of iSandlwana was the bloodiest defeat inflicted upon the British Army during the Victorian era, and it sent shock-waves around the world and catapulted the Zulu people into a media spotlight from which they have yet to escape. That same day a small garrison of British troops at the border post of Rorke’s Drift held off an attack by overwhelming Zulu numbers for nearly ten hours earning no less than eleven Victoria Crosses (this incident was the inspiration for the Michael Caine film Zulu). Yet beneath the stereotypes of noble warriors and heroic redcoats the battles in fact reflected a brutal clash of cultures, a destructive collision of two warrior peoples that shaped the course of South African history into recent times. Closely researched, Zulu Rising follows the lives of individuals on both sides and weaves them together into a visceral description of the fighting – and its aftermath.
Zulu Rising follows the lives of individuals on both sides. Now that should be interesting. |

| There is a quite a good piece on Zulu Rising in today's (Sunday 29 August) Sunday Times Culture Supplement.
I quote, "In this exceptional book, Ian Knight manages to expose many of the Victorian myths while still capturing the kind of epic excitement that makes Zulu so strirring. It is a first-class work of military history, not least for its evocative and extensive use of Zulu sources."

| Hi 90th
I shall be bringing a copy of this excellent book with me to Oz to give to the Great White Queen's father when we visit at Xmas. Bit worried about excess baggage though - it's a hefty piece of work - the book that is, not the Great White Queen ..... mind you .....
In my opinion, the Sunday Times reviewer quoted in my above post has got it "bang on".

| Having been busy on other matters for a while (including a 10 day cruise) - I saw this thread and hopped onto my Seekbook account to check the status of my order for this and also for Mike Snooks - both have been on order since July.
Was not happy to find the status for both books as 'not yet published' !!!
As I can get both books off Amazon a suitable email volley is on it's way to seekbooks who apparently live in some alternate universe.. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
