| Today, the 132nd anniversary of the battle\massacre at Enthombe Drift, I visited the site and found the monument and mass grave marvelously repaired and cleaned! I stood by the river which, this year is rather low due to a very dry mid summer and remenisced about the misfortune of Capt. Moriarty and Co. I shall send some photos to admin to put on the forum! |

| The restoration was undertaken by the Burials Unit of the South African Heritage Resources Agency, headed by Mr Troy Phili. Mr Alastair Cowan (who has been instrumental in obtaining additional funding from the British Government) and I arranged to meet the Mpumalanga Tourism and Heritage people at eNtombe 18 months ago and after a great deal of discussion, a report was submitted and Mr Phili responded by restoring the site with alacrity. By the way, the South African Agency of the Commonwealth War Grave Commission (headed by Capt (SAN) (Retd) Charles Ross has now assumed responsibility for the maintenance of all British military cemeteries in SA where there are 10 graves or more. This applies to the Frontier Wars in the Eastern Cape, the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, the Transvaal War of Independence (1880-1881) and the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). I have all of his quarterly reports available should you require them. Please drop me an e-mail and I'll send them to you. My e-mail address is ken.gillings@mweb.co.za Regards, Ken |
