All are period strikings, the silver medals on suspension with swing bar pinback, mounted in the frame, extremely fine. Accompaning the miniatures in the 430 mm x 795 mm matted frame are a sepia-toned photograph of the Major wearing the fullsize medals, a colour lithograph of the Army battling the Zulu warriors, a biography of the Major and a brass identification plate. Footnote: Major General Sir Matthew William Edward Gosset K.C.B. was born on July 6, 1839. He entered the Army in 1856, at the age of seventeen and served as Ensign in the 54th Regiment during the Indian Mutiny, 1857-1858. After the war, he was appointed to the Royal Military College as an Insturctor in Tactics from 1873 until 1877, followed by a period where he served as a Brigade Major at Aldershot form 1877 to 1878. He was called to serve his country again, this time in South Africa for three years, from 1878 to 1881. Gosset was involved in the Kaffir campaign operations against the Gaikas in the Buffalo Mountains and Perie Bush. During the Zulu campaign, he served as Aide-de-Camp to Lord Chelmsford at the time of the Battle of Isandhlwana. He later saw employment in the Quarter-Master-General's Department, in addition to serving in the First and Second Advance into Zululand: the Battle of Ullundi and Transvaal Campaign. He was appointed as Commandant of Durban and Acting Quarter-Master-General in 1881. His focus later shifted to the Indian theatre again, where he commanded the 1st Dorset Regiment from 1887 to 1890, then commanded the 2nd Class District Burmah and Bangalor from 1891 to 1896. Gosset was promoted Major General in 1896 and retired in 1903 as Colonel of the Dorsetshire Regiment. While in South Africa, he was Mentioned in Dispatches in the London Gazette, March 15 and August 21, 1879, noting Brevet Major and Lieutenant-Colonel. Gosset was awarded his Knight Commander of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath in 1897. He passed away on March 17, 1909 in his seventieth year" |
