William Pring was born at Taunton, Somerset, and enlisted there in 1873 into the 36th Brigade. Posted to the 13th Foot, he served in South Africa during the 9th Kaffir War in 1878 and in the Zulu War of 1879. He embarked for England in August 1879 and was placed on the Army Reserve on 19 June 1880.
