THESE FIRST PICTURES ARE OF THE RED BROWN SHIELD.IT IS 56 X 94 CM`S AND OF VERY THICK HIDE. IT IS STILL FAIRLY FLEXIBLE UNLIKE THE OTHER TWO WHICH HAVE GONE VERY HARD AND SHOW SHRINKAGE AND WARPING DUE TO AGE. THE SHIELD IS HEAVY AND THE HIDE WOULD CERTAINLY DO THE JOB ESPECIALLY DEFLECTING MISSILES AND BLOWS .IT DOES NOT HAVE THE FEEL OR LOOK OF EVEN AN OLD TOURIST PIECE, ALL THREE CAME FROM A LOCAL AUCTION AS ONE LOT AND WERE FROM A RECENT HOUSE CLEARANCE.THE SHIELD IS UN.DAMAGED EXCEPT FOR HAIR LOSS AND A FEW SMALL HOLES FROM WALL HANGING.

Not easy getting information on sellers from an auction house but I`m working on it.It seems that the pictures of the best shield haven`t got through to admin yet so I will try again asap.It is far better than the other two. all the best bandit1200

The date seems to be wrong. Could be me reading it wrongly.

The date is wrong for some reason. It says January 4th 1887.Not the date of Ulundi but the date of Terrys promotion to general on his retirement.It also says (now general) on the inscription so i can only surmise that it was added at that time.
