Frederick Spanner served on HMS Shah in 1879. Can anyone confirm.

"Frederick Spanner served on HMS Shah in 1879, this means he was awarded the South Africa 1877-1879 medal with 1879 clasp (Zulu War). Shah provided a 150 man Naval Brigade to serve with the Army. And again HMS Eurylaus between 1882 and 1884, which means he would also be entitled to the Egypt 1882 Medal with the clasp for Suakin. This particular medal was always issued with the Khedive's Star that in his case would be dated 1882. I feel this is your man, because there is only one SR for a Frederick Spanner and this is almost certainly him.

In addition to medal actions above, HMS Shah was involved in an action with the Peruvian Turret ShipHuascar in May 1877."

Frederick Spanner was an Able Seaman serving on HMS Shah. On 7 March 1879 he was one of 16 officers and 378 men who landed at Durban for the Naval Brigade.

Spanner was entitled to the South Africa Medal with clasp "1879", which was sent to him in September 1881 while he was serving aboard HMS Excellent.
