The photograph of Milne in the “Zulu War Image of the Week” has him in the uniform of a Sub-Lieutenant.

He was promoted to Sub-Lieutenant on 20 Apr 1875 while serving on HMS Raleigh. (Co-incidentally, also serving on “Raleigh” was Signalman 3rd Class William H. Aynsley, who was to become his servant when Milne served on Lord Chelmsford’s staff.)

Milne was promoted to Lieutenant on 1 Jun 1876.

The carte de visite photograph of Archibald B. Milne was taken by Mr. Jabez Hughes; Royal Photographic Studio (Photographer to the Queen and H.R.H. The Prince of Wales); Regina House; Ryde, Isle of Wight.
Milne was quite favored with the royals, who called him 'Arky-Barky,' and spent a lot of time visiting them. He served on the staff of no less than four kings. (Ian Knight, Who's Who in the Zulu War 1879, page 147.
