"Charles Hollard Smith, left 1857; St. Peter's Coll., Camb.; migrated to St. John's; LL.B., 1863; Bar (Inner Temple), 1864. Kirk Neuk, Lazonby, Cumberland. Charles Holled Smith, b. 1846 ; Ensign 60th Foot 1865; Lieut., 1869; Capt., 1877; transferred to K.R.R. ; Major, 1882 ; Lieut. -Col., 1885 ; Col., 1888 ; Major-General, 1900 ; served with 3rd Battn. 60th Rifles in Zulu War ; from April to Sept., 1879 (Medal with Clasp) ; served in Boer War of 1881, being present at the engagements at Lang's Nek, Majuba Mountain, and the Ingago River
(Despatches) ; with 3rd Battn. King's Royal Rifle Corps in Egyptian War of 1882, present at the reconnaissance in force from Alexandria on Aug. 5th, in the en- gagement at Tel-el-Mahuta, the action at K assas- sin on Sept. 9th, and the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (Despatches; Brevet of Major; Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star); in the Nile Expedition of 1884-5 w jth the Egyptian Army, and employed on the Lines of Communication; was afterwards Commandant at Semneh (Despatches; Brevet of Lieut. -Colonel; Clasp); with the Soudan Frontier Field Force of 1885-6; Commanded a brigade during the operations near Suakim in Dec, 1888, including the engagement at Gemaizah (Despatches; Brevet of Colonel; Clasp); Commanded the force during the operations in Feb., 1891. including the capture of Tokar (Clasp; 2nd Class Medjidie); Governor General of the Red Sea Littoral, 1888-92; C.B., 1891; K.C.M.G., 1892; Commandant, Victorian Local Forces with local rank of Major-General, 1894-1900. Xurscombe Grange, Bramley, Surrey".

Again from Mackinnon & Shadbolt .
Captain C.H.Smith joined the Battalion ( 3 / 60th Rifles ) at Fort Chelmesford in May , and served with it throughout the remainer of the campaign ,
being present in the advance of Crealock's Divis , to Port Durnford , and the second advance on Ulundi .

The pic you posted is of Sir Charles George Smith a Pioneer of Durban , not Charles Hollard Smith from the 3/60th .

Charles Holled Smith, Died 8 March 1925, and is buried in Hangleton Churchyard nr Portslade on Sea, West Sussex.
