Zero tolerance to harassment and bullying. |
Due to recent events on this forum, we have now imposed a zero tolerance to harassment and bullying. All reports will be treated seriously, and will lead to a permanent ban of both membership and IP address.
Any member blatantly corresponding in a deliberate and provoking manner will be removed from the forum as quickly as possible after the event.

We are all here to communicate and enjoy the various discussions and information on the Anglo Zulu War of 1879. Opinions will vary, you will agree and disagree with one another, we will have debates, and so it goes.
There is no excuse for harassment or bullying of anyone by another person on this site.

| SHERGOLD,John.2-24/914Private. Born at St. George's, London, Middlesex; trade -labourer. Description: age 18 years 3 months, height 5' 5 3/4", fresh complexion, grey eyes, brown hair. Attested at Coventry, Warwickshire 1/3/1859. Posted to 2nd Bn 24th Foot. Private 1/3/1859. In confinement 29/4/1859 - 1/5/1859. Tried 2/5/1859; sentence remitted. Granted Good Conduct Pay at 1 penny per diem 11/4/1862. Forfeited Good Conduct Pay 14/12/1863. Good Conduct Pay at 1penny per diem restored 14/12/1864. Granted Good Conduct Pay at 2 pence per diem 4/3/1867. Re-engaged at Rangoon to complete service amounting to 21 years 26/1868. Forfeited 1 penny per diem Good Conduct Pay 12/2/1871. Good Conduct Payat 2 pence per diem restored 12/2/1872. Granted Good Conduct Pay at 3 pence per diem 12/2/1874. Granted Good Conduct Pay at 4 pence per diem 4/3/1877. Forfeited 1 penny per diem Good Conduct Pay 9/10/1878. Good Conduct Pay at 4 pence per diem restored 9/10/1879. Claimed compensation for field kit lost at Isandhlwana. Admitted to hospital in Natal 9/11/1879; Treated for Debility and Chronic Rheumatism. Examined by a Medical Board at Pinetown, Natal 15/11/1879 'For transfer to Netley Hospital'. Admitted to Netley Hospital, Confirmed as weakly and worn out. Rheumatism better but he is not likely to be fit for further service. Will be able to contribute slightly to his own support. Discharged as unfit for further service 6/4/1880. Character good, clean, temperate. Intended place of residence: 43 East Road, London. Served in Mediterranean, India and South Africa. Served in the Kaffir War 1878. Served in the Zulu War 1879 (WO97), a Private in B Company at the defence of Rorke's Drift. Reference: Bourne rolls; on Medal Roll he is incorrectly named J. Shergo. South Africa Medal with clasp 1877-8-9.
