great article, its a long time since i read that, i
have always agreed with that scenario.. his book
on the 2nd Boer war is epic, a 1st ed hb. is cheap

Well done , not like Les I'd like to know the price if you dont mind ? , you can pm me if you wish , I dont want to hear Les coughing and spluttering !. I got my copies at a reasonable price as well , also from S.A if memory serves me correctly , I've only read ' Zululand At War ' mostly Clery's letters although there are many others . It's well worth the money and you wont be disappointed I can guarantee it ! . Thanks for posting Pakenham , nothing much has changed there with most of what he states .

Look's an interesting book. Not sure there's anything we don't already know, or have worked out for ourselves.

"Nothing we didn't already know", I am sure thats right. After all it's been out for 30 years!

Aside from JW's essays and JY/Isandula's photos, I am not sure I have read or seen anything new on the subject for many years now.

But that's not the point, there are fewer copies of this book in the world than there are members of this forum and I'm rather pleased to have one.

"Nothing we didn't already know", well Steve i think you
might be pleasantly surprised by the amount of detail in
the letter's, from her majesty, cambridge, Harness, St
Vincent, clery, frere, crealock's..and many more! Clery
is particularly revealing! i never liked him after reading
his letters. the more i read about north crealock the
same applied, lots and lots of snippets i would never have
even thought of, enjoy the set, look forward to hearing
what you think! and your right, there are only 3 thousand
on the planet! Brenthurst have said they have no plans to
ever reprint this series. it would in their opinion devalue
the series. cheers xhosa

Looking forward to it Les. I think there are even fewer around than you said - print run of 1000?

The other two volumes I am waiting for are The War of the Axe and The Defence of Ladysmith and Mafeking. Not our war, but either side of it. I already have Clarke's first book, so they should make a nice little set on the bookcase - if I can find the room!

Yes, is it not interesting for people who
study this war! the cut off point! my
earliest books are a 3 volume set on the
franco prussian war1871 which i purchased
by accident for a ridiculously small amount.
inspired by the saga of the P.I. i have al-
ways been interested in Natal' History and
have pretty much followed it closely up to
the war of 1879. and the 1st War of Inde-
pedence.! which is my cut off point! after
the shameful capitulation at O'Neils Cottage
i started to understand Britain's real interest
in the south east of africa! good book choices
mate! enough from me.. xhosa
