Murphy isnt listed in Mack & Shad so it appears he wasnt an officer if he was involved in the 1879 conflict . Had a quick look in the Forsyth Roll and didnt find him either . Although I only checked the Commissariat and Medical Rolls . Did find a Gunner J.Murphy Royal Artillery 7th Bgde , 11th Battery , 2188 Medal with Clasp 77-78-79 , which makes sense if he took part in the Sekukuni Campaign as Littlehand's post suggests .

According to the London Gazette - a James Fraser Murphy was commissioned into the Donegal Artillery Militia on 9 Jan 1875 - promoted Captain 30 Apr 1879.
