Sergeant Robert Maxfield of the 2nd Battalion, 24th Regiment, was delirious and although they managed to get him dressed, they could not induce him to move and when they returned to carry him away he was being stabbed to death,

As a member of Pope's G Coy 2/24th, poor Maxfield was destined to die whether he went across the Mzinyathi with the rest of his company, or got sick and stayed at the hospital. Salute
