Could this rifle be a snider-enfield, and could this be the Abbysinia campaign (Battle of Magdala)?

Morning all.

First points go to Mr Cooper! It is indeed a Snider Enfield rifle he carries across his shoulders. That should help you narrow the date range. After Crimea and before Zulu.

But no, not Abyssinia I am afraid.

The hat offers something of a clue as to where the Regiment has just been, but not to where it is in the photograph.

We are talking Southern Hemisphere.

I'd say the British soldier is from the 75th (Stirlingshire) Regiment, they were posted from China to Fort Napier. I have previously posted a photograph of Durnford with their officers, including 'Lucky' Essex at Fort Napier.

As to the locally-recruited man I'd venture a guess that he is one of Hlubi's baSotho.

So it relates to all that discussion we were having just a few days ago about Durnford and Langalibelele. Its in the Bushmans River Pass.

Les, the photo is reproduced in Drooglever (but you probably wouldn't recognise the enlargements from that - they are very small).

I feel quite exhausted.
