"Thomas Groom, age of 23 enlisted on 10 June 1874 in the 2nd Battalion, 24th foot. On the 18th of October 1874 he was transferred to the 1st Battalion 24th Foot and would see out the rest of his service in this battalion, taking part in operations against the Gcalekas and gaikas tribes 1877-8 and Zulu War of 1879. He transferred to the army reserve 8th of March 1880. He spent the remaining part of his life in Liverpool, and resided at 14 Park Street."
