| Hello everyone, I am new here and I hope to learn much from this very informative forum. For me I suppose it was seeing the Film 'Zulu' which kicked off my interest, back in 1964 I was 14 years old, but it was the start of a lifelong interest in the conflict which pitched Zulu and Brit against one another.
I am far from being an expert on this conflict, but now here I hope to increase my knowledge.
On a separate note I have to confess that my chosen forum name is not my own, I was desperately trying to find a forum name I could use as my own in its many forms was already taken! I opted in the finish for the name of an ACW Confederate leader whose war record I admire.
I do hope this is acceptable. |

| Oh dear.
Forrest was a rebel cavalry leader, he hardly ever showed any mercy for Union soldiers (especially coloured troops). He was responsible for the massacre of the coloured troops at fort Pillow when they had surrendered, so in other words, he was a murderer.
Hiram Ulysses Grant (U.S. Grant), never forgave Forrest for what he did at fort Pillow, nor indeed any other of his merciless and unnecessary killings of surrendered Union soldiers. He may have been a decent cavalry officer, but as a human being he was not very decent at all, therefore, I can't see anything much to admire about this KKK member. |

| Mr. Cooper,
I assume your reply was a comment on my forum name rather than a welcome post.
In a very un-civil Civil war, I would say he was no worse nor better than many other commanders of either side. As for his involvement with the KKK, Well, I did say I admired his 'War Record' and that particular episode was after the war during the early years of reconstruction.
I dare say that during the Zulu war there were British soldiers who decided to take 'no prisoners' or at the very least finish off the wounded. Human beings have a habit of not being very humane during warfare, particularly Civil warfare.
However, if my forum name causes you or anyone else any discomfort, then by all means I'll withdraw. |

| Hello NB, your very much welcome, please do not take comments in any way as a personal affront.. a tossed pebble always causes a ripple effect..don't with draw, stay and contribute whenever you want to, and please say anything you like..i myself think Sherman was a devil and not in disguise, he hammered out to grant time and time again the need for total war, he said that war must be made so terrible that afterwards it would never be contemplated ever again.. cheers xhosa |

| Hello NB, Yes, my comment was about Forrest himself and not about you. I do know that there would most likely be others that had committed awful deeds, but Forrest was one of the worst abusers. As Les says, Sherman was a man with little regard for his enemy, but most of the destruction that was blamed on him (by the South), was often caused by the retreating reb's setting fires to cotton warehouses and other biuldings that contained rebel stores etc, even some Southern home owners set fire to their own houses. These fires often spread and caused other buildings to burn down, so even though the South blamed Sherman, it was not all his doing. And I do agree with Les that Sherman used to hammer it out with Grant, I think he saw it as his duty to see that the South could never rise again and cause all the suffering and death to their fellow Americans. Anyway NB, please don't think I was getting at you, I was refering to Forrest not you, so please stay with us, no need to withdraw at all, and I am sure your contributions will be of great value to the forum. Oh! and by the way, welcome on board. |

| Hello Mr. Cooper,
With regard to who is to blame for the death and starvation caused by Shermans march to the sea, I will respectfully have to disagree with you.
And with that now over, I thank you for your welcome to the forum and I look forward to contributing where I can although I fear I will be the one doing all the learning on this period!
Thank you again for the welcome Sir! |

| Sorry NB Martin is fully convinced that the South Wales Borderors and the Royal Regiment of Wales have stolen the glory of 1879 from the 24th Regiment of Foot. All orchestrated by that machiavelian figure Sir Stanley Baker. I for my sins insist on winding him up on it ( he does have a valid point but heaven forbid I tell him that)
Cheers |
