John Henry Bumpus was a Boatswain aboard HMS Liffey on the Pacific Station from November 1877 to November 1878 when he was transferred to HMS Shah for passage to England. The "Shah" was diverted to Natal for service in the Zulu War. Bumpus arrived at the Lower Tugela on 27 April 1879 to join the Naval Brigade already in the field and remained with the brigade until 22 July 1879. His name in confirmed on the medal roll as entitled to the South Africa Medal with the "1879" clasp.
