| Kate,
Worthy of further research, especially as the report states “D.S.M.” The Distinguished Service Medal was only instituted by King George V in 1914. The award is normally associated with the Royal Navy and the Royal Marines as it was awarded for valour at sea.

| Newspapers are not always accurate as you know - SWB/2391 Noot, James 1st Bn SWB awarded Army LS&GC 1/10/1897. Enlisted 6/12/1876, discharged 5/12/1897. Served South Africa 1/2/1978-8/9/1879. Also in Egypt and Gibraltar. |

| Hi all Came across this www.naval-history.net:
R N Medals
John Noot, Shipwright Pembroke Dock. 5 January 1915 Imperial Service Medal.
Also: The Haverfordwest and Milford Haven Telegraph, June 27,1917.
Funeral of Miss Mary Jane Noot :- impressive scenes were witnessed at the funeral last Thursday of Miss Mary Jane Noot, youngest daughter of Mr James Noot, Hillblock, whose death at the age of 20 took place on the previous Sunday. Also present were here three brothers, Fred, Herbert, Jack and sister Gladys Noot. Discovered that brother Jack served in WWI.
Also: Unit History South Wales Borderers Pte James Noot was still serving in 1897, no medal mentioned.
Dont know if this is the same James as on the article, John above may be a relation.
