PostSubject: John Lewis 2nd Company of Royal Engineers   john - John Lewis 2nd Company of Royal Engineers EmptyThu Feb 02, 2023 10:29 pm

The Cardiff Times and South Wales Weekly News, Saturday, June 7, 1879.

Letter from a Cardiff man

A letter has been received from John Lewis, of the 2nd Company of Royal Engineers, and son of Mr Daniel Lewis, plasterer, Bedford Street Cardiff. He describes the part he took in escorting a convoy of 130 wagons, which was three miles long, over a terrible hard road.
During this trying March one of the Buffs fell out with pains in his groins, but the doctor sent him back to his duty, and he died. Three others were buried on the same day, they having died from the effects of the bivuacing in the open air.
When the men woke in the morning, says the writer, they are wet through.
They sleep with all their straps and belts on, and their ammunition about them, so they do not get much rest.
