| There was a discussion on here a wee while ago about who was first across. Well this expalins all. Unfortunatly the second part of the article at the top of the next colum is not legible so this is all there is. | This has already been published. For anyone interested the full article including the missing concluding part which Kate alludes to can be found on page 22 of The Red Book. Fortunately it is all perfectly legible. |

| Apart from the first three paragraphs which have not been published. The Red Book article starts at "Up to four this morning"

| No worries Julian. I actually have my well thumbed Red Book sitting next to me which I'm trying to use as I go through the online newpapers. As you know its a superb resource though the date order for some of the articles is a bit weird. I'm trying not to duplicate articles as I don't want to tread on the late Ron Lock and Peter Quantril's toes but I've subsequently realised that I have duplicated a couple. Happy for you to give me the heads up if I miss one. Kate |

| There's no point in pointing out duplications - it's easily done. I only did it this time because you pointed out that the end was missing and the Red Book has it. |

| For those who don't have the Red Book. I've found a better copy of the article which is nice and clear. So to finish off my first post here it is. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Natal Witness 18th January 1879 |

| Kate , Julian Page 22 of the Red Book ... '' The ground was most difficult ... thick thorn jungle densely covering a chaos of boulders and rocks of enormous size , in which were great fissures and caves , where the enemy could , and did , hide , firing from practically safe positions upon our advancing troops '' . YES , I've been there 3 times and the thorns are certainly bad news ! , it appears the area hasn't changed from 1879 , if anything , it might be worse , thorn bushes are probably more prolific nowadays , it was hard going when 8 or so of us forced our way through up to the Caves , can only imagine how difficult it would be for a larger group attempting the same ..... 90th |
