Private 25th Brigade No. 499 John Power, D.C.M., 1st Battalion, 24th Regiment served in No. 1 Squadron, Mounted Infantry.

Survived the Battle of iSandlwana.

Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for gallant conduct during the 9th Cape Frontier War in September 1878; Khambula 29th March 1879 & Ulundi 4th July 1879.

Decorated by Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle on 9th December 1879.

Maybe Power's horse was spooked by dog Lion?

I wish people would close up their computers and go where history was made. There is a memorial headstone to Pte Power DCM in St John's Priory Church in Kilkenny and to dog Lion in (now called James Stephens) Barracks in the town.
