PostSubject: The Pictorial World - March 15th 1879   The Pictorial World - March 15th 1879 EmptyFri Jul 26, 2024 1:13 pm

Good afternoon all.

I picked up this edition of the Pictorial world from Ebay (It was one of three the seller had for sale)

Thought the text and associated images may be of interest to others, so this is my first proper post on here.

Apologies if the images aren't particularly clear. I tried converting the text in the images but it couldn't read the font properly.

(Being a period publication, the text includes language that is inappropriate today and may offend)

Best regards, Ben.

Hi Ben,

Thanks for sharing your find! It's great to see unique historical pieces being preserved and appreciated. I'm sure many will find the text and images fascinating, even with the challenges in clarity. I expect quite a few members have a copy. Always good to have a copy in your library, but don't believe everything the newspapers say. Even back then. 🫡

I wouldn’t be apologising for period text that may offend these are historical papers from over 140 years ago, that’s the language that was used back then, too many people trying to change history

Never change language from an historical source to suit current trends or out of fear. History cannot be altered (unless you're Stalin - and even then not permanently). It just isn't done academically. And never apologize. There is no need for a 'disclaimer' and if people are annoyed that you haven't issued one then they are too ignorant of understanding the historical context of what they are reading.
It was very good of you to post this - the RD picture is one that is rarely used. It always rather amuses me. Is it trying to portray the fact that Bromhead was slightly deaf, was trying to hear above the noise of the firing, or merely arranging his coiffure...
