1278 Private D. THOMAS

Hello, I am trying to find out some history from a old family medal. It's a South African medal 1877-8-9. 1278 or 1218 Pte D. Thomas 2/24th foot.

I think he may have died at Isandlwana.

If anybody has information that would be excellent. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum! 25B/1218 Private David Thomas was killed in action at Isandlwana on 22 January, 1879. He is confirmed on the Medal Roll for the 2/24th, as well as in L. T. Tavender’s “Casualty Roll” and in Norman Holmes’ “The Noble 24th". The South Wales Daily News of March 17, 1879 also contains his name in the published “Death Roll of Isandula.”

If the Medal is in the family good on you , it's worth a decent amount of money if you're unaware , somewhere in the region of 8.5 - 9.5 K depending on it's condition . Very Happy

THOMAS David – Private – 25B/1218 – 2nd/24th G Company
Enlisted 20/2/1877.
Effects claimed by his father under AGL113 – E/77379/-.
South Africa Medal with clasp 1877-8-9.
Memorialized at Brecon Cathedral.

This may be useful to you as it identifies his coy (and therefore location on the battlefield) and his enlistment.
