| Bertram Tennyson was the nephew of the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson. He served on HMS Active during the Zulu War. After leaving the Navy he moved to Canada where in 1881 he first took up farming. He next became a stage driver. He later fought as a scout during the North West Rebellion.
Bertram then studied law and he was called to the bar in 1891.
In 1899 Bertram gave up his law practice to travel to the Yukon in search of gold. By the time he arrived, the gold mines had all been staked. He returned to England where he died of influenza in 1900.
